Our Mission

To create a community among the children of the world through music and the performing arts;

To provide for all children, regardless of their economic status, the very best instruction in these arts;

And through this to foster in each child a sense of competence, self-confidence, fulfillment and an open heart.

Beginning as a summer program founded by Leela Pratt in a corner of the Oakland Mormon Temple Auditorium in July of 2000, Young Performers International, or YPI, has grown to include schools in 3 Bay Area counties, countless students, and a wonderful staff of professional musicians and teachers. We are true to our mission of helping young people to creatively express themselves through music instruction, music performance, composition and other performing arts. Most of our public schools have had arts curriculum slashed from their budgets and children are being exposed to artistic outlets with less frequency now than ever before. YPI aims to bridge this gap & make the joy of music accessible to all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status. In addition to our work in the San Francisco bay area, our outreach program has also extended internationally to schools in Zimbabwe and El Salvador.

FAQs

  • Our instructors are based in Marin, Petaluma, San Francisco, or the East Bay - we even have some international students! We can come to you for in-person lessons, or teach lessons virtually via Zoom.

  • YPI specializes in teaching a wide range of instruments including guitar, bass, piano, drums, and vocals, mainly in contemporary styles & genres. We meet each student where they’re at with a custom-tailored approach to each student’s musical interests & skill level.

    We also love doing rock bands & have had some pretty killer line-ups and band names over the years (shoutout to No WiFi!).

  • All of our lessons can be done in-person at your own home, or virtually via Zoom if preferred. All of our instructors are fully-vaccinated and Covid-compliant.

    We mainly offer 60min lessons & 30min lessons, though can do varying lesson lengths if desired (I.e. 45min or 90min lessons).

  • All of our teachers are highly-skilled at their respective instruments, and are some of the Bay Area’s top musicians in their own rights. Our instructors are all active, working musicians in the music business (hello, street cred!), are deeply-versed in their craft, and passionate about passing on the joy of musical & creative expression to the next generation of up-and-coming musicians. In short: our teachers are THE BEST, and we think you’ll agree with us there!

  • Great question! We always say that YPI is for all kids from ages 5-95. While the bulk of our students are kids & teens, we love working with students of all ages, and we’ve had countless adult students that have equally loved our lessons. Family band? We’re in!

  • Absolutely! We are deeply-committed to making music accessible, approachable, and fun for all children. Music helps children with special needs learn to participate in very different ways as opposed to a traditional classroom setting (auditory or visually). Studies have shown that music is a wonderful teaching tool for all children, but even in particular for students with special needs, special-learning, and even with anxiety. We’d be happy to discuss your child’s needs and meet them where they’re at.

  • Wahoo! We’re glad to bring you into the YPI community! You can send us an inquiry via our Contact page, or send an email to tracey@youngperformersinternational.org.

    One of our staff will be in touch with you shortly to answer any questions, find out more about your student, and then get you matched with one of our fantastic instructors that will best suit your student’s individual needs. From there, you’ll schedule your first lesson with your teacher, and you’ll be on your way!

  • We bill monthly for all lessons taken in the month via Square invoice. We do require a credit card on-file for all students. Bills are sent out around the first of the month for all lessons taken in the month prior, and are due by the 15th of the month. Any invoices not paid by the 15th of the month are subject to a $25 late fee. We do have an auto-pay option available for those who wish to “set it & forget it.”
